Seat Refurbishment Appeal

The Nottingham Arts Theatre is currently undergoing a staged refurbishment process to bring up the standard of the building and the service we offer to everyone that uses our facilities.

Over the past few years we have decorated the front of the theatre, done essential repairs to the roof, renovated our backstage administrative areas and green room, created a new studio theatre as well as freshen up the auditorium with a rich red paint.

Our technical provision has also been improved greatly through joining forces with the City Council’s team of technicians from College Street and an investment into more up to date lighting and sound equipment.

Looking into the future we have exciting plans to renovate our coffee bar, upper rehearsal room, dressing rooms, foyer and toilet facilities and we are applying for funding to try and help get these projects off the ground.

However, the one area we are really keen to improve next is our auditorium seating.  The current seats were donated to the Nottingham Arts Theatre from the old Derby Playhouse back in 1963 and they have done us proud over the past 50 years.  But obviously time is taking its toll and the are in desperate need of refurbishment.

We plan to refurbish the existing seats by reupholstering and re-polishing the seats. The refurbishment is estimated at approximately £60 per seat.  Refurbishment rather than replacement is the better option for us due to the cost and also to replace them would mean we lose a significant number of seats due to new legislation.

As part of our efforts to raise the required funds we would like to give our patrons the opportunity to donate and sponsor a seat in our auditorium.  Any donations, however small, would be gratefully received however perhaps you would like to help pay for the refurbishment of one or more seats to help bring a better theatre experience to our future audiences.

If you would like to donate to the refurbishment fund there are several ways that you can donate.

Press Release - BLINK

Issued: Tuesday 1 November 2011blinkwebimage300x259px

Ref: Blink – New Play By Acclaimed Nottingham Playwright Hits Arts Theatre

The People’s Theatre Company’s exciting inaugural season at Nottingham Arts Theatre continues with the eagerly-anticipated world premiere production of Blink by acclaimed local playwright Simon Carter.

Simon Carter is familiar to audiences as the author of Phys Ed, which received critical acclaim at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe and previously at Manchester’s 24-7 Theatre Festival. Productions of other plays by Simon have won awards at both the 2010 and 2011 Nottingham One Act Play Festivals and a film script based on the Calverton Plough Play – pitched as morris dancing meets The Cannonball Run – is now being developed by Simon in conjunction with Nottingham’s Television Workshop.

Blink tells the poignant and powerful story of Thomas, a locked-in syndrome patient, whose only means of communication, the blinking of an eye, has deserted him. Concerned only for the wellbeing of his daughter Sylvia, Thomas’ life takes a sinister turn when he discovers that the neurologist treating him has a terrifying past, an unhealthy obsession with Sylvia and a most disturbing idea of what's best for Thomas. Fully aware and regaining limited mobility, can Thomas warn his daughter in time and save her from a monster?

Compelling and intense, Blink explores one man’s tragic struggle to communicate, for the love of his daughter, against overwhelming odds.
